Alicante is one of the driest cities in Spain, with only around 310mm of rain a year. Highs sit at about 17°C in January, 21°C in April, 28°C in June and 31°C in July and August, when the nights stay warm too. Sea temperatures reach around 23°C in June and peak at about 27°C in August, and the water is still close to 26°C in September and 23°C in October.
The rain that does fall comes mostly in September and October, sometimes as a sudden, torrential downpour, so keep a flexible day in your plans in early autumn. Winter highs in the mid to high teens make this a sensible winter-sun choice for walking and long lunches, though the sea is too cool for most swimmers from December to April.
For beach weather without the July and August peak, choose late May to June or mid-September to mid-October. The Hogueras de San Juan run from around 19 to 24 June, ending with the bonfires on the night of the 24th, and city-centre hotels book up well ahead for it.
