Land at Agadir Al Massira and transfer to the Sofitel Agadir Royal Bay. Depending on your flight time, there may be an afternoon left for the beach in front of the hotel or a walk along the promenade before dinner.
Go up to the ruins of Agadir Oufella, the old kasbah on the hill above the port, for a view over the whole bay. Then spend a few hours in Souk El Had, the city’s main market, for spices, argan oil, leather and fresh produce. The souk is closed on Mondays.
Drive east along the Souss valley to Taroudant, a market town enclosed by almost complete earth ramparts. Its two souks are smaller and calmer than Marrakech’s. The drive is roughly 85 km each way, so allow a full day.
Head north up the coast to Essaouira, whose walled medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the sea ramparts, watch the fishing boats come into the port and eat grilled fish at the harbour stalls. Allow about three hours each way, which makes this the longest day out.
Visit a women’s argan oil cooperative to see the nuts cracked and pressed by hand, then continue to the palm oasis of Tiout, below a ruined kasbah in the Anti-Atlas foothills.
Drive into the hills north-east of Agadir towards Immouzer des Ida Outanane, a Berber village known for its honey and terraced fields. The road climbs through palm gorges, so it is a slow drive. Check the local market day before you go.
Keep a day with nothing planned. Spend it by the pool or on the beach, book a treatment at the spa, or take a taxi to the marina for lunch and a last walk along the seafront.

October opens the winter-sun season for holidays to Agadir. Expect T-shirt beach days and a jumper after dark. The Atlantic is the catch: from December to April a swim is brisk rather than lazy. The bay beach runs for around 10 km, flat and wide, with a café-lined promenade and the marina at its northern end. It looks calm, but this is open Atlantic. The FCDO says many Moroccan beaches have limited or no lifeguard cover, with strong currents and unexpected waves. Swim where flags are posted.
For surfing, Taghazout is about 20 km north of Agadir, with surf schools that take complete beginners. Paradise Valley is a palm gorge with rock pools in the foothills, about an hour inland on narrow mountain roads. The pools run low by late summer.
The dirham is a closed currency, so you cannot buy it in the UK. Use airport cash machines, and change leftover dirhams back before you fly home. Hotels and larger restaurants take cards. Carry cash for the souk and petit taxis.
