Our Faro holidays are a city stay in the Algarve's capital, on Portugal's south coast. You get 3, 5 or 7 nights at AP Eva Senses with daily breakfast, return economy flights from the UK and private airport transfers. The resort towns and the Ria Formosa islands are day trips. Prices are quoted for your dates, per person based on two sharing. ATOL 10713 protected.
Think of this as a city base in Faro rather than a week on a resort strip. Evenings are spent in the old town and along the waterfront, with lunch and dinner left to you.
The days below follow the longest stay. On a shorter one, keep the old town, one island day and one coastal drive, and skip the others. Boat trips, car hire, tours and wine tastings cost extra. Ask and we will add them to your quote, or arrange them once you are in Faro.
Why You'll Love It
Ponta da Piedade, Lagos
Rock stacks, arches and grottoes at the western end of the coast, carved by the Atlantic. The clifftop steps give the view for free, and small boats from Lagos marina go into the grottoes.
Ria Formosa Natural Park
A protected lagoon of channels, salt marsh and barrier islands running about 60 km along the coast either side of Faro. Flamingos feed in the shallows, and the islands hold the area’s quietest beaches.
Tavira and Silves
Tavira, east of Faro, has a castle, an old bridge over the River Gilão and churches decorated with azulejo tiles. Inland Silves was the Moorish capital of the Algarve and is still dominated by its red sandstone castle.
Algarve seafood
Order cataplana, clams and fish cooked in a sealed copper pan, or simply grilled fish with olive oil and lemon. Caldeirada, the regional fish stew, is the winter choice. Finish with a glass of medronho, the local arbutus brandy.
Day by Day
Your driver meets you at Faro Airport and takes you to AP Eva Senses. Once you have checked in, spend the late afternoon in the old town and keep the first dinner simple, somewhere near the marina.
You can book a lagoon boat trip from the piers by the marina (not included) and spend the morning out among the channels and sandbanks. Bring binoculars and a hat. The afternoon is free for the town or the hotel.
A long day west by hire car or organised tour, neither included. Walk the clifftop paths at Ponta da Piedade in the morning light, take a small boat into the grottoes if the sea is calm, then have lunch in Lagos before heading back.
Head inland to Silves by hire car or tour (not included). Walk up through the town to the castle walls, then on the way back you can stop at a local wine estate for a tasting. Book the tasting a day or two ahead.
Catch a morning boat out and give the island the whole day. Take water and sun cream, follow the boardwalk to the southern tip, and reserve lunch at the island’s restaurant in advance during summer. Boat tickets are not included.
Go east to Tavira by train or hire car (not included). Cross the old bridge, climb to the castle garden, and in summer take the short boat over to Ilha de Tavira for an afternoon on the sand before heading back to Faro.
Use the last morning for the rooftop pool in season, or a final coffee and a walk round the old town walls. Your private transfer then takes you back to Faro Airport for the flight to the UK.

The rooftop has a pool and bar open in the summer months, with views over the marina towards the Ria Formosa. There are two restaurants, a spa and a fitness centre. Faro, Portugal is a working city, not a resort. The walled Cidade Velha sits behind the Arco da Vila, with the marina and ferry piers a short walk away. The airport is so close that Faro Algarve holidays work as a long weekend.
The catch is the beach: there isn't one in town. Praia de Faro is on Ilha de Faro, a sand spit reached by road bridge and bus. For a capital instead, compare a Lisbon city break.
The usual alternative for Algarve holidays is a resort town further west or east.

AP Eva Senses puts you in the first row. Both ends of the coast are a day out by hire car, which is not included.
Ilha Deserta, also called Barreta, is about 45 minutes by catamaran from the Porta Nova pier beside the old town. There is one restaurant and no village. Its tip, Cabo de Santa Maria, is the southernmost point of mainland Portugal.
Culatra and Farol share the next island east, about 15 minutes by public ferry from the Cais das Portas do Mar. Choose Deserta for empty sand, Culatra for a fishing village.
Ferry timetables shrink after mid-September. Check the last boat back before you set off, especially to Culatra.

July and August average 13 days above 30°C. Winter sun is real but mild: January averages 16.3°C by day and 8.3°C at night, good for walking, golf and the islands, not swimming. Madeira holidays are the other Portuguese winter option.
Your passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. Stays of up to 90 days in any 180 need no visa.
Portugal uses the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully running at its airports since April 2026. Expect fingerprints and a photo at Faro on your first trip, and allow extra time. ETIAS is not yet in operation and has no confirmed start date. Check the Foreign Office advice before you travel.
It suits couples and friends who would rather eat out than stay on a hotel complex. Golfers do well too: the courses at Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura lie between Faro and Vilamoura, and tee times can be added to your quote.
