Fez is inland, so this is a culture trip rather than a beach one. Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, another UNESCO site, make an easy day out, and the blue-washed mountain town of Chefchaouen is around four hours' drive north.
Fez is known for pastilla, the sweet-savoury pie, alongside slow-cooked tagines, harira soup and medina street food, served everywhere from simple stalls to restaurants in restored riads.

Fez sits inland at around 570m, so it has hot, dry summers and cool, damp winters rather than a coastal climate. Highs average about 35°C in July and August and 31°C in June. Spring and autumn are far kinder, at around 22°C in April, 26°C in May and October and 30°C in September. In winter, days reach around 16°C but nights drop to about 4°C, and old riads can feel chilly, so pack a warm layer.
Rain falls mainly from October to May, typically on five to seven days a month. March to May and late September to November are the best times for walking the medina.
Ramadan is expected to start around 8 February 2027 and run into early March. During the month, many cafés and food stalls close in daylight and opening hours in the souks shorten, though evenings are lively. Eid al-Adha is expected around 16 May 2027, when businesses close for several days. The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music is usually held in late May or June and fills the best riads early.
