Thessaloniki has much colder winters than the Greek islands. Highs average around 9–11°C from December to February, and the Vardaris, a cold northerly wind down the Axios valley, can make the waterfront raw on some days. Summer is hot, with highs of about 30°C in June and 32°C in July and August. May and September are around 25–27°C and October about 21°C.
Rain is spread through the year rather than packed into winter, with November the wettest month. The waters of the Thermaic Gulf reach about 24°C in June and 27°C in August. In summer the Makedonia Palace's outdoor pool, open from May to September, is a useful extra.
May, June and late September to October are the best months for walking the old town and the waterfront. The Thessaloniki International Fair takes over the city in early-to-mid September, and the film festival runs in early November. Both fill central hotels, so book early if your dates overlap.
