Brazil luxury tours start with a choice of regions, because the country is too big to see in one trip. Which luxury Brazil tour itinerary suits you?

Our Brazil tour packages follow three routes. All three include Iguazu Falls and Rio, so the real decision is between the Amazon, colonial Salvador and a Peru extension with Machu Picchu.

Rio de Janeiro: the heart of any luxury Brazil tour

All three routes use the same Rio hotel, which has faced Copacabana beach since 1923. Its pool and beachfront position are the reason to stay there rather than further inland.

Two guided days cover the sights that justify the long flight. Sugarloaf is reached by cable car in two stages, with views across Guanabara Bay. Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado is reached by a cog train that climbs through the Tijuca forest. A free day follows for Ipanema, the Selarón Steps or the hilltop streets of Santa Teresa.

One safety point applies to everyone. The FCDO advises staying off the city beaches after dark and avoiding all favelas, including tours marketed to visitors. Your private guide and hotel transfers handle the rest.

The Amazon: how a luxury jungle lodge stay works

A Brazil holiday with Rio and the Amazon adds a domestic flight north to the rainforest. On our Rio, Iguazu and Amazon route, you fly from Foz do Iguaçu to Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state.

From Manaus, Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge is 180 km away at Novo Airão, on the Rio Negro. The lodge’s standard transfer is a shared van on a paved road, taking about 2 hours 45 minutes. A seaplane of around 35 minutes, or a private van, can be arranged at extra cost.

The lodge faces the Anavilhanas archipelago, a maze of river islands on the Rio Negro. Rooms are air-conditioned chalets and bungalows with balconies over the river or the forest. The all-inclusive board covers meals and a set of guided excursions. These include canoe trips through the islands, forest walks with a naturalist, piranha fishing, a visit to a riverside community and a night boat outing to look for caimans. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and guides adjust the plan to what the river allows.

High water and low water

The Rio Negro rises and falls by several metres a year, and that decides what you do. At high water, canoes slip through flooded forest known as igapó. At low water, white sand beaches and forest trails appear, and some narrow channels close to boats.

2026 is forecast to be a dry year. In September, Brazil’s Geological Survey warned that the Rio Negro at Manaus could fall to one of its lowest levels on record by the end of October. In a year like that, expect more forest walks and fewer canoe routes.

Iguazu Falls: Brazilian side or Argentinian side?

Both, ideally, because each side shows you something different. The falls are a chain of 275 cascades across nearly 3 km of the Iguazu River, and the border runs down the middle.

The Brazilian side gives the wide view. A single cliff-edge path leads to a viewpoint near the Devil’s Throat. The Argentinian side is a network of upper and lower walkways, ending at the Garganta del Diablo platform directly above the main drop. It takes most of a day.

The Brazilian-side hotel on all three routes, open since 1958, is the only hotel inside the national park. Guests can walk the trail before the gates open to day visitors and after they close. That makes it the stronger base if you only have two nights.

The Peru route also includes a stay on the Argentinian side, at the Gran Meliá inside Iguazú National Park, so each side can be walked from its own base.

Each side is a separate national park with its own entry ticket. Ask your specialist whether both tickets are in your quote.

How long should a luxury Brazil tour from the UK be?

Work it out from the stops rather than picking a round number. Rio needs three nights at the least, and a fourth gives you a spare day for cloud, because Corcovado and Sugarloaf both lose their views when the summits are covered. Iguazu Falls needs two nights to see both sides, and three if you want a slower pace. The Amazon lodge or Salvador needs three.

Then add the overnight flight out and the journey home. Each internal hop takes roughly half a day once hotel checkout, the airport and the transfer are counted. Adding Peru needs at least four more nights for the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco.

Tailoring ideas beyond the classic route

Salvador and Bahia

Salvador was Brazil’s first capital, and its hilltop Pelourinho district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of churches and colonial squares. The Salvador route stays in a former Carmelite convent in the middle of it. Beach extensions further south along the Bahia coast can be added.

The Pantanal

The Pantanal is a vast seasonal wetland in western Brazil, part of it listed by UNESCO. Its open landscape makes it the usual choice for travellers who want jaguars, giant otters and big wading birds rather than rainforest. It is reached via Cuiabá or Campo Grande, not Manaus, so it replaces the Amazon rather than sitting beside it.
