Santorini is windier and a touch cooler than its reputation suggests. Highs average around 23°C in May, 27–28°C in June and about 30°C in July and August, and the meltemi, a strong and persistent north wind, blows through much of the summer. It keeps the heat in check but can make clifftop terraces breezy after dark and the sea choppy.
The water is the slowest part of the picture: around 18–19°C in May, 22°C in June and a peak of about 24–25°C in August and September. September is the best all-round month, with the warmest sea, steadier weather and highs near 27°C. Late April, May and October suit the caldera walk from Fira to Oia, though some days are cool and rain returns in October.
Crowds are the other consideration. Oia's sunset draws large numbers in high summer, and cruise-ship days add to the congestion in Fira. Canaves Oia Epitome closes from November to March, as does much of the island's tourist trade, so the realistic window is April to October.
