Quick answer

Africa holidays from the UK fall into two kinds of trip: short-haul hotel weeks in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, and long-haul safari tours in Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda and Uganda. A North Africa hotel week costs far less than a safari tour. Choose North Africa for shorter flights and beach or city weeks; choose a safari for wildlife, guided itineraries and a higher budget.

To pick a country, start with the one thing you most want to see, then check the best months for it below. Jet lag is slight on every route here: South Africa and Rwanda are two hours ahead of UK winter time, and Kenya and Uganda three. Most safari holidays to Africa are multi-centre: a city stay followed by two or three lodges or camps. Every move between them is a road transfer or an internal flight, so count the stops on a route before comparing prices, as each one uses part of a day.

Where to go in Africa, and who each suits

Best months by region

  • Morocco: March to May and September to November. Marrakesh and Fez can pass 40°C in July and August. In January, Marrakesh reaches about 19°C by day and 6°C at night, and Agadir about 20°C with seven hours of sun a day.
  • Tunisia: Hammamet averages about 16°C in January, with the sea at a similar temperature, so a winter week there is not a swimming holiday.
  • Egypt’s Red Sea: spring and autumn are most comfortable; July and August often reach 35–40°C.
  • Kenya and South Africa: the Masai Mara and Kruger each have a different peak season; the safari guide and the Cape Town and Kruger guide set out the months.
  • Rwanda: the main dry season, June to September, has the easiest trekking paths.

What drives the cost

  • Flight length: London to Marrakesh takes about three and a half hours; a direct flight to Nairobi about nine.
  • Permits: a gorilla permit in Rwanda costs US$1,500 per person, and park fees apply across the safari countries.
  • Season: the dry months are the busiest on safari.

Africa holidays FAQs

Do I need a visa for North Africa?

Not for Morocco or Tunisia, for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Egypt normally needs a visa, but if you fly into Sharm El Sheikh and stay in the South Sinai resorts for under 15 days, you get a free entry stamp instead of a visa. Details are on our Morocco and Tunisia pages and on gov.uk.

Which safari countries need a visa before I fly?

Kenya needs an electronic travel authorisation, ideally two weeks ahead, and Uganda an online visa plus a yellow fever certificate. Rwanda gives British citizens a free 30-day visa on arrival. South Africa needs no visa for up to 90 days, but every traveller must complete an online traveller declaration before travel. An East African tourist visa (US$100) covers Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda for 90 days.

How much passport validity do I need?

Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Egypt need at least six months from your arrival date. South Africa needs 30 days beyond the date you leave and two blank pages, and children aged 17 and under have extra document rules set by its Department of Home Affairs.

Do I need malaria tablets for Africa?

For Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Kruger area, usually yes; there is no malaria risk in Morocco, Tunisia, Cape Town or Egypt’s Red Sea resorts. Check each country on the NHS-backed TravelHealthPro site and see a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you go.

Can children join a gorilla trek?

Not under 15, the minimum age for gorilla trekking in both Rwanda and Uganda.
