How many nights in Bangkok and Koh Samui?
Bangkok rewards a short, busy stay. Samui needs longer, because the first beach day usually goes on recovering from the journey. The split below keeps the city to three or four nights at most.

Bangkok and Koh Samui itinerary: a 10-night plan
This is a stay-by-stay outline rather than an hour-by-hour schedule. Swap days around to suit weekend markets and the weather.
Days 1 to 3: Bangkok
- The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, home of the Emerald Buddha. Go at opening time, before the heat and the tour groups build.
- Wat Pho and its reclining Buddha, a short walk south of the palace.
- Wat Arun on the far bank, reached by the cross-river ferry.
- Chatuchak Weekend Market, open on Saturdays and Sundays only, so plan your arrival day around it.
- A half-day trip out of the city to a floating market, or Jim Thompson House for Thai silk and teak architecture.
Day 4: fly to the island
A morning departure has you on the beach by lunchtime. Check out of your Bangkok hotel with time to spare, because city traffic to Suvarnabhumi is unpredictable.
Days 4 to 10: Koh Samui
- A full beach day to recover before any excursions.
- A boat day to Ang Thong Marine Park, a cluster of limestone islands about 30km offshore with kayaking and a steep viewpoint climb.
- Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) on its islet off the north-east tip.
- An evening in Fishermanโs Village at Bophut.
- The Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations south of Lamai.
- Na Muang waterfall inland. Skip it after heavy rain, as flash floods are a known risk at Thai waterfalls.
How do you get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?
Samui has no road or rail bridge to the mainland, so every route ends by air or by sea. The choice comes down to time against cost.

When is the best time for a Bangkok and Koh Samui holiday?
Samui runs on a different weather clock from Bangkok. The UK Foreign Office notes that Thailandโs rainy season is generally May to October, but on Koh Samui and the south-east coast it usually falls between November and March. That offset is why the island can be at its best while Bangkok is wet.

The months that work well in both places are roughly January to April. The Foreign Office also warns that weather patterns are becoming less predictable, so treat any month as a probability rather than a promise.

Where to stay in Bangkok and on Koh Samui
Choose the area before the hotel. In Bangkok the area decides how long you spend in traffic. On Samui it decides the kind of beach you wake up to.
Bangkok
- Riverside (Chao Phraya). The best base for the temples, with river ferries and hotel boats sidestepping the roads.
- Sukhumvit. On the BTS Skytrain line, close to the big malls, restaurants and nightlife.
- Silom and Sathorn. The business districts, with Lumphini Park nearby and rooftop views over the skyline.
Koh Samui
- Chaweng. The longest and busiest beach, with the most bars, shops and nightlife.
- Lamai. The second beach: lively after dark, but smaller and a little more relaxed than Chaweng.
- Bophut. Fishermanโs Village, with its old wooden shophouses and restaurant strip on the north coast.
- Mae Nam. Quiet north-coast sand, the pick for couples who want to do very little.
- Choeng Mon. A set of small bays on the north-east tip, sheltered and good for families.
